Let the Games Begin

Even though since 1999 there has not been a single outbreak in which it was verified that the illness was caused by an Illinois raw milk producer, the  Illinois Department of Public Health has decided the rules for Raw Milk Sales in Illinois must be revised. A Raw Milk Sales Subcommittee of the Department of Food, Drugs and Dairy has been formed.

Fortunately, I was asked  by the department director to serve on this subcommittee. Unfortunately the invitation came AFTER they had already met twice, and AFTER the revised rules were in their second draft form.

This, my raw milk friends, is going to get interesting.

  1. Alas, am not a bit surprised. Funny how rules like these FLY though, but when something REALLY needs to be done to protect the public safety, it gets stuck in a committee or in red tape hell for ever.
The war on our freedom of food just keeps getting nastier and nastier. They have no respect for our natural rights. I know that you don't have time for this, but if you do decide to join, I thank you for your dedication. Give 'em milk-hell!

  2. Stand your ground. It is the principle of the thing that just bugs the bejeezus out of me. Mother nature has gotten along just fine for 1000's of years without all the bureaucrats sticking their noses in it. Darn it all.

  4. Carolyn. I am FULLY vested. Keith and knew we'd be having this raw milk battle one day. Looks like today is the day. Yes, it will take time and it would be easy to say "let someone else take care of this" but I cannot. I will however take all the help I can get. If you live in Illinois and you drink or produce raw milk, contact me. opies99@gmail.com

  5. Martha. I WILL. I also plan to attend the next mtg with a bright red, handwoven scarf around my neck! Not sure if it will a symbol of power or just give them a better target to aim at :)But at least I'll go down looking like a million bucks.

  6. Terri. Thank you, it's a minor battle in the scope of eternal life but a HUGE battle here and now for many consumers whose childrens health depend on raw milk and for farmers whose future depends on the income.

  17. I live in another state, but i know the dominio effect can be scary once started.

Here at least, we are allowed access to raw milk and can buy it at the farm or in stores (mostly health-food stores and co-ops).

    Stay strong!

  19. Here is an interesting thought...We can go to a few states and smoke as much pot as we want legally, but be thrown in jail for drinking raw milk.

  20. Your neighbors to the west are still fighting for their right to sell and consume raw milk. A meeting of House and Senate subcommittees is scheduled for this Wednesday, February 27th to discuss the issue for the third year in a row. Let's hope this time they come to their senses and make raw milk legal in Iowa.
